Feature Request: Backup and restore settings
Summary
Firestorm allows to backup and restore settings, which includes per user settings, custom windlight settings and so much more. With the exception of only a few options not being backed up for some reason (e.g. "Lossy Texture Compression") this is the perfect tool to move a configured viewer from one computer to the other, if implemented well regardless of OS and data location.
How would you like the feature to work?
First of all, see how Firestorm does it.
A well implemented "backup and restore" feature does not only aid in creating a disaster recovery of a configured Alchemy installation, it could also provide the following additional benefits:
- Restore settings after a clean re-install, leveraging a smart restore function to omit or correct config settings that have been superseded, altered in newer versions or which are not relevant on the target installation. This may keep users from experiencing issues when upgrading to a much newer version.
- Create backup files that allow provisioning of preconfigured viewers among group members or enterprises thanks to fine grained control of what should be backed up and what not.
- Support restoring settings to a different architecture, operating system, viewer branch or data location which might otherwise be a big hassle to the user.
Why is this feature important to you? How would it benefit the community?
Backup and Restore is absolutely important and doesn't need further explanation. No user is interested in reconfiguring their viewer again, and again, and again.
